Packaging and labelling of all cosmetic products is governed by the Trade Practices Act 1974 and associated regulations. The regulations require listing of all ingredients contained in a cosmetic product, in descending order by volume or mass. Misleading or deceptive claims in relation to cosmetic products are open to action by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC). Where a cosmetic chemical is used in the workplace and determined to be a hazardous substance in accordance with the National Occupational Health and Safety Commission (ASCC) National Model Regulations for the Control of Workplace Hazardous Substances, specific labelling requirements also apply.
