Dealing with Cowlicks

If you’ve ever had a bad hair day thanks to that little piece of hair that just won’t stay down, you’re not alone. Cowlicks (that little piece of hair) happen when the direction it grows in, forms a spiral pattern and causes the hair to stand up or lie at an unmanageable angle. Most cowlicks form at the top of the crown, but they can be just about anywhere.

The best way to deal with a cowlick is to opt for a cut that will work with the cowlick and not against it. Model Claudia Schiffer has been rumored to have two cowlicks, which she works with by wearing her hair longer and styling it so that the cowlicks blend in with the rest of her hair.

· If your cowlick happens to be at the front of the hairline, have your stylist blend the cowlick into the bangs or add heavy bangs to hold the cowlick down. · If your cowlick exists at the nape of the neck, either have the haircut very short to eliminate the cowlick or wear it very long to hide it. · Texture can also effect how a cowlick lies. If you have thick or curly hair, try adding short layers throughout your hair. If even a haircut alone won’t tame your unruly cowlick, you may need to use a good styling product and/or tool to help tame it. · To tame a hairline cowlick, use a blow dryer and a round brush to dry the bangs in a forward position. This will help weigh the bangs down. If your cowlick likes to hang around the side of your head and lie flat, you can tame it by adding a small amount of styling gel or mousse to the root of the problem and then using a blow dryer and round brush to create volume to the cowlick. · If your cowlick is at the nape of your neck, you can style it down with pomade if it’s short and comb it in the direction it grows. If your styling tool or product isn’t working for you, you may benefit from a perm or relaxer to tame that cowlick. Or try this trick: · Apply your choice of styling product to damp hair and then using a flat brush, blow dry against the growth of the cowlick. Next, brush the hair in the opposite direction and roll the brush under as you blow dry. Repeat by going the other direction. Continue alternating until the hair is dry. If you’re still unable to get your cowlick under control and it’s that much of a bother, there are some permanent alternative that you can try. · Waxing – While this is not a permanent option, it could cause the cowlick to become easier to style after repeated waxing. · Electrolysis – Can be a permanent option, but in some cases your cowlick may actually grow back after time.

· Plastic Surgery – If you feel you have no other option, plastic surgery may be right for you. Keep in mind however, as with any surgery, it is extremely risky.
