Japanese Hair Straightening

The process of Japanese Hair Straightening goes by many names: Thermal Reconditioning, Japanese Straight Perm, Rebonding, Thermal Reconstruction, and Ironic Straightener, to name a few. But all of these names mean the same thing: the path to permanently straight hair. As you can tell by the name, this method developed in Japan and has become one of the most popular hair treatments all over the world.

There are numerous salons that offer this service so it isn’t hard to find the right place for the job. The entire process can take between 2-8 hours, depending on the length, thickness and condition of the hair. Price-wise, it depends on the salon. Many charge by the hour, while others may charge a flat rate once they evaluate the status of your hair and what needs to be done. The typical price range can be anywhere between $100-800 or more.

So what is the secret to the process that achieves such fabulous results? Japanese Hair Straightening involves a very thorough process of washing the hair and straightening it using a series of heated styling tools. While it may sound like a lot of wear and tear, you will emerge from the salon with completely retexturized, sleek, bone-straight, healthy hair.

After the hair has been assessed by a stylist, the hair is washed first. Protein may be added to the hair at an additional cost. The protein works to strengthen and protect the hair during the procedure. Next the first solution that breaks down the hair’s natural state is applied and then rinsed out. The hair is then blow-dried. Using a thermal straight iron, the hair is ironed flat. Afterwards, the second solution is applied. This reforms the hair’s bonds and is also rinsed out. The hair is once again blow-dried. And that’s it!

All of the heat used on the hair may make it seem as if this process is very bad but in fact, this treatment makes the hair healthier and shinier. Unlike other hair treatments, humidity or other factors will not affect the hair or subject it to split ends or breakage. Most salons will provide you with a special shampoo and conditioner to go with your new ‘do so throw out your other hair products that can have a negative effect on your hair. It is a general rule of thumb to avoid washing your hair for 12-72 hours after the treatment to make sure the hair has completely reformed to its new state.

Japanese Hair Straightening is not recommended for those with tightly curled hair or hair that has undergone multiple serious chemical treatments. The results for Japanese Hair Straightening usually last for one year and may require a touch-up session to take care of new growth.
