African American women have their own concerns and issues regarding their hair and the styles they wear. Fortunately, there are now a number of companies that market products that are specifically designed for the unique needs of African American hair. Since coarse, curly hair has a tendency to get dry and brittle easily, moisturizing treatments are high on an African American woman’s hair care list. Keep in mind that the longer you want to keep your hair, the more moisturizing treatments and TLC your hair will require. The good news is that with the plethora of conditioner, straighteners and relaxers on the market today, you are sure to find the perfect product that will allow you to get the style of your dreams.
Braids are Back As the natural look has found its place once again in African American hairstyles, braids have come back into vogue as well. Although braids may take a bit of work to create, the end result will be hair that is low maintenance, easy care and looks great all day every day. Braids can work well for long or short styles, on men as well as women, and they can be pulled back into a band or left loose to frame the face. Whether you opt for twists, dred locs or cornrows, you can find a braided style that will look great with your own personal style. Keep in mind that if you go with a braided style, you will want to use a residue free shampoo to keep your braids looking and feeling their best. The good news is that you will not need to do much conditioning, since the braids will keep the hair in better shape. Straight can Happen Although you may have resigned yourself to your curly top, with the many quality relaxers and straighteners on the market today, it is possible to have a straight and sleek African American hairstyle, or simply tame those curls into a manageable do. For completely straight hair, begin with a relaxing product that will loosen your curls and follow up with a straightening iron. Make sure that you give your hair plenty of conditioning treatments with this type of style, since the products can be very drying and damaging to already brittle-prone hair. Many women find that by applying a relaxer to their tresses, they can have manageable curls in a wash and go style. Again, the longer your hair gets, the more conditioning it will need to keep it looking its absolute best.
Although hair brings with it a host of specific concerns for African American women in terms of care and styling, there are plenty of products on the market today that can protect and nourish your hair while giving you the style that you are looking for. Enjoy your hair!
