Step By Step Fishtail Braids

Want something different and fun for the summer? Why not try a fishtail braid? They’re a great look for just about any style and while they may look difficult, they’re actually easier than you think. The braid works best on hair that is shoulder-length or longer and has not been layered. The best way to try out this braid is to have a friend help you. Once you get the hang of it, you can try braiding on your own.

For a Fishtail Ponytail Braid

· Begin by, placing clean, dry hair into a ponytail.

· Next, divide the ponytail into two equal parts. Take a small section from underneath the left part and cross it over to the right part.

· Hold the ponytail securely with your left hand and take a small section of hair from underneath the ride side.

· Next, bring the section from underneath the right across to the left of your hair.

· Now, hold the right side securely with your right hand and the repeat steps until you’ve reached the end of the ponytail. Make sure that you allow enough of an end to prevent the braid from coming undone.

· Finally, Secure the ends of the hair with a ponytail holder that is safe on hair.

For a Full Fishtail Braid

· Start by parting your hair down the middle. Now, take a small section from the right side of your part and twist it away from the face.

· Using a comb, separate a ½-inch section just below the first section along your face and twist it away from your face, adding it to the first piece.

· Repeat the 2^nd step, adding pieces along your hairline until you’ve reached the neck. Secure the hair into place at the neck with a clip.

· Next, take the left side of your part and twist it away from your face.

· Separate a ½-inch section just below the first section, twisting it away from the face and then adding it to the first piece.

· Repeat the step just as you did with the right side until you’ve reached the neck.

· Once you have reached the nape of your neck, unclip the right side and grasp both the left and right sides into two separate sections with your hands.

· Now, pull a ½ inch section of the hair from the right side, adding it to the left side. Continue the step by adding a piece from the left side to the right side.

· Finish by continuing to add ½ inch sections until you’ve left just enough at the ends to prevent the braid from coming undone. Secure with a ponytail holder.

Finally, keep in mind that to keep the fishtail appearance, you’ll need to be sure that each of the sections are pulled tightly as well as equaled in thickness.

Now that you’re finished, you can add hair jewels, clips, pins, ribbons or other hair ornaments to the braid to give it some added romance or pizzazz. The hair ornaments aren’t necessary however since this braid looks great alone. Happy Braiding!
