Many of us may be most familiar with Henna as it`s use for body art as most of go with the traditional chemical methods of coloring, low-lighting, or highlighting our hair. Henna, however, is a great way to achieve the same results, but with natural ingredients that aren`t as harsh or permanent as with traditional hair-coloring treatments. If you`ve never tried Henna, we`ll fill you in on the details and basics of what it`s all about and how it`s different than your everyday chemical version of hair coloring.
Henna Vs Chemical Hair Coloring Many women opt for Henna hair-coloring treatments solely because they are less synthetic than traditional forms of coloring. Henna is a natural hair-coloring that has been used for centuries in Middle Eastern and Indian cultures. Although it`s original form only produced red shades of coloring in the hair, now darker and lighter versions of Henna can be mixed and used to produce different shades of red and brown and everything in between. Unlike traditional chemical treatments, Henna cannot lighten hair, although it can be applied to dark hair to add red or brown highlights, or lighter hair to produce red or brown lowlights. Henna does not act like a dye on hair as chemical treatments do, but rather acts as a coat of coloring around the hair.
Henna`s Other Qualities A great thing about Henna is that it is actually good for the hair. In fact, Henna is known and used sometimes solely for it`s conditioning qualities. This means that you`re hair will actually be healthier after using Henna. Furthermore, Henna has been shown to have anti-fungal qualities that help to treat dandruff.
Henna doesn`t last as long as the traditional chemical version of hair-coloring, but it is considerably cheaper. Hair experts say that you can save up to thirty-percent a year on hair coloring by switching to Henna. You`ll need to repeat treatment every 6-12 weeks, depending on your color selection or hair type, but since Henna is healthy for the hair, you`re actually doing your hair a favor. If you`ve typically used chemical treatments in the past to color your hair, there`s no need to wait to switch to Henna - it can be applied directly over the chemical coloring.
You may want to consult with a stylist to chose the right color for you or the correct mixture of shades to produce the color you want. Most first-time Henna user purchase the at-home version which comes with an instructional kit, but you can also take this kit to your local stylist and pay them to apply it at least the first time around.
Another great thing about Henna is that if you try it and find that you still prefer the permanent and traditional means of hair-coloring, you can always go back!
