Your hair looks great – but how do you maintain the color?
The week before you have your hair colored is the longest week of the year. Your color has faded and you can’t wait for your next appointment. The time seems to drag and to make matters worse, it seems like you have more social engagements that week than any other time of the month. If you are like most people who tint their hair, the time between appointments is a steady progression of loss of color tone not to mention those tell-tale roots that are a sure give-away that you “touch up” your hair.
Your hair always looks best when the pigment is fresh. When the color starts to fade and look washed-out, you know that it is time to see your stylist or to reapply your hair color. For most people the need to re-tint is every four weeks. In between times there are things you can do to protect your hair and help maintain its hue. 1. Know the limitations of your hair color product. Semi-permanent hair color is made to stand up to 6 to 12 shampoos. Demi-permanent color should hold through 28 shampoos. Highlights will last 3 to 4 months. Check with your color stylist to see which product or treatment is best for your look and your hair type. Discuss color maintenance with your hair care professional.
2. Choose a tint that is complimentary and suits you. If you select something far from your own natural color, it will be harder to maintain.
3. Choose a shampoo that is made for color-treated hair. There are some wonderful products designed to protect hair without stripping it of the color. It doesn’t have to be the most expensive shampoo on the shelf, but it should be formulated to protect color-treated hair. You might want to dilute the shampoo and use half strength rather than full strength. You might also want to choose a color-enhancing shampoo. These products deposit a small amount of color on your hair to keep that fresh look.
4. Don’t wash your hair every day. Most hair can be fresh and clean on an every-other-day washing schedule.
5. Stay out of the sun. One of the quickest ways to ruin a hair color is to have prolonged exposure to the sun. When you are outdoors put on a hat. Not only will it protect your hair color, but it will protect your scalp as well.
6. If roots are a problem, there are special products designed just for root touchups. These products are readily available where hair products are sold. Be sure to check with your stylist before you use any product.
