Everyone wants great hair but many have a hard time obtaining “the look” or keeping their tresses healthy all year long. Not to fret, internationally renowned hair stylist and owner of Godiva Salon in Buckhead, Tony Promiscuo explains how to achieve the look you’re after and how you can keep your hair healthy.
After you’ve left your hair appointment and love your new look, you may wonder how to maintain that “straight from the salon” look at home. To start, Promiscuo suggests washing your hair only every other day. He recommends avoiding shampoos that claim to be conditioning; they deliver short-term results but can build up on your hair over time. It is best to choose a shampoo that suits your hair type. Most people require either body or control. Beyond that, you may alternate with one for specific challenges such as color protection or deep cleansing. Daily conditioners fall into the same categories, body or control. There are a few extremely effective conditioning treatments that need to remain on for several minutes. These special treatments can really make a difference in long lasting health for your hair, especially if the hair is chemically treated. Along with choosing the right shampoo and conditioner, it is best to have your hair cut at least every six weeks to guarantee not only healthy hair but also good performance otherwise the hair loses its shape and original style. When styling your hair, there are many myths that revolve around blow-drying. To set the record straight, it’s not as evil as it’s reputed to be. Promiscuo recommends prepping your hair with a styling product that coincides with the look you’re trying to achieve and then applying a protective product to help prevent damage from the thermal styling tools. When blow drying, it is best to avoid concentrating on one area of hair too long but rather to keep it moving with slow even movements over the section to be dried. Whenever a curling or flat iron has been left to heat for a while, Promiscuo recommends to always temper it with a damp cloth before putting it in your hair. This will prevent any unnecessary damage when styling hair.
With all the different hair products on the market today, it is hard to know which one is best for what. Promiscuo helps by breaking down hair products into two categories: “styling products” and “effects products”. Styling products give your style memory and durability. The right product will do this while being almost undetectable. It helps to think of them as starch in the collar of a fine blouse. It is the difference in a style that lasts for a couple of hours or one that lasts all day. Effects products, on the other hand, can create a variety of effects from slip to wax. These products are usually applied after the style is completed to create texture and definition. When using these products it is best to use a small amount at first as they can add weight to the hair.
The last bit of advice that Promiscuo offers deals with hair spray. It is important to select a hair spray based on the desired amount of hold needed. You may need a medium hold for a typical day and firm hold for special occasions; it’s really your preference. For best results, avoid holding hair spray to close to your hair to prevent build up and dryness.
