Dealing With Curly Hair

Taming Your Curls

Having naturally curly hair is a blessing and a curse. People envy your waves or try to get their hands on your springy ringlets. You have lots of options when styling curly hair. But keeping your curly mop from frizzing can be tough. Here is what you need to know to tame your curls.

Get a Good Hair Cut

A good hair cut can do wonders. Most people with curly locks avoid salons. They usually end up walking out with hair that better resembles a poodle than a style.

Pricier salons often have stylists who specialize in curly hair. But, you can also call around to more moderately priced salons to find someone who knows what to do with curls. Don’t be afraid to ask what technique the stylist plans to use to cut your hair.

Stylists who specialize in curly hair often avoid cutting hair while it’s wet, layering curly hair, or thinning it. They often use the “carving and slicing” method to reduce the volume of curls while maintaining their natural pattern.

Find a salon that suits you, and trim your hair regularly. Even if you’re trying to grow your hair long, get a trim at least every three months to keep the ends fresh and healthy.

Shampoo and Condition Your Hair - But Not Everyday!

Curly hair is often dry. Especially if you are of African decent, your hair can easily become brittle. Choose a shampoo that is formulated for curly hair and doesn’t rob your hair of all of its natural oils. Always condition your hair after shampooing.

Since curly hair is usually dry, avoid shampooing your hair every day. In fact, you can easily shampoo once a week without your hair appearing greasy. You can wet and condition your hair between shampoos to help it stay clean.

Style Your Hair with the Right Products and Techniques

When it comes to styling curly hair, you get to think: should I go straight or stay wavy today? Staying wavy means fighting frizz. While your hair is wet, apply a moisturizing mousse or gel, preferably one that’s silicone based. Use a diffuser when blow drying your hair. Avoid running a brush or comb through your hair while drying. Instead, once your hair is almost dry, try scrunching it to break up the curls. Apply an anti-frizz serum. You only need a drop or two for your entire head. Finally, apply hairspray, but don’t try to comb out your hair!

If you maintain a good hair style, treat your hair well by not over washing, and use a few quick styling techniques, you will have curly locks that anyone would envy. You may never want to go straight again!
