Do you ever wonder why one day Paris Hilton’s hair barely reaches her shoulders and the next, she has a silky blonde mane that reaches the middle of her back? Her secret: She went to her stylist for extensions.
Extensions are real or artificial hair combined with your natural hair to lengthen your locks. They come in various colors and lengths; and of course they also come as braids. High quality extensions do not come cheap, and they require regular maintenance. But, if you have thin hair or just want a different look fast, they are a good option. Before you get extensions, don’t be afraid to talk to a stylist or two before choosing your stylist and your extensions. Select a stylist who attaches your extensions to a braid they have made across your head. Ask them about the quality of hair they use. Hair quality can vary. Note that the quality of hair may affect the price of your extensions.
Here’s what to watch out for when you go for extensions: · Ever heard the phrase “no pain no gain”? It does not apply to getting extensions. If your stylist is causing you pain, they are not applying your extensions properly. · Avoid stylists who want to glue or weave extensions. Applications like these, called the “individual method” often damage your hair when you try to remove your extensions. · Avoid synthetic hair. Synthetic hair generally doesn’t blend well with your natural hair.
When you get extensions, keep them shorter than 30”. Most women look best with extensions that are 18- 22” in length.
Once you get extensions, there are a few things to note about their maintenance: · When extensions are attached to your head with a braid, you have to visit the salon every 6-8 weeks to have them reapplied. This is because as your hair grows out, the braid moves further from your scalp. · You can wash your extensions as you do your hair. Make sure to wash between your braids to keep your scalp clean. This prevents bacteria from growing on your scalp. · If you choose extensions made of natural hair, you need to moisturize them. The oils from your scalp that moisturize your natural hair do not moisturize your extensions. If your extensions become dry, they can break. If you break your extensions, they do not grow back. · Brush your extensions carefully and regularly. Start from the bottom of your hair and work your way up.
If you’re nice to your extensions, they can last for months and give you a lot of options. You can wear your hair long or put it up, or style it any way you want!
