Are you tired of constantly shaving your bikini line or sick of the pungent odor of hair removal creams? There is another option: waxing. Granted, it can be a little painful. But, the results last a lot longer.
What are the ins and outs of waxing? Can you try it at home? Here’s the deal: If you want to go Brazilian (completely bare down there) or leave a landing strip (a little hair down there), your best bet is a salon. Grooming your bikini line is the easiest do yourself. But spread out some newspapers, because it’s going to be messy. Other than the mess, there are a few more challenges to waxing at home. If you pick a waxing kit that requires you to heat the wax, it can be difficult to maintain its temperature. It has to be hot enough to cling to your hair, but not so hot that it burns your skin. Also, it can be difficult to take off even amounts of hair on both sides of your bikini line.
If you want to save the visit to the salon, try these tips: · Trim your hair to about ¼” long or shave a couple weeks before waxing. · Be generous with the wax. Being stingy can make it harder to pull out your hair and lead to missed spots. · Pull the skin taught right as you remove the wax. This helps the wax grab the hairs and lift them as you remove it. · Condition your skin as recommended by the waxing kit. Good waxing kits come with conditioning lotion and oils (for waxing without strips). · Use tweezers to pull out any stray hairs once you’re through.
After you wax, your skin may be reddish and sensitive for a few hours. Avoid hot water, chlorine, and the sun during this time. Also, exfoliate your skin regularly to help prevent ingrown hairs.
If you’d rather visit a salon, prices range from $10-$70, depending on the type of waxing you want and the salon. It generally takes less than half an hour. Be clear about what kind of waxing you want. Remember, even though it may be awkward for you, they are professionals. They’ve seen it all.
If you’re afraid of the pain, avoid waxing right before your period when your skin may be sensitive. Avoid caffeine before your appointment, and take an ibuprofen about an hour ahead of time.
Whether you do it yourself, wax your bikini line, or go completely clean, waxing has results that shaving and creams can’t produce. The process is worth the worry-free weeks of not having hairs peek out or enduring bumpy skin that shaving causes.
