At times it can seem virtually impossible to not stress out about something: money, work, relationships. However, how we stress can affect not only our mood but our health as well. When it comes to men, even the type of stress they deal with compared to women, is on a different level. If you need a better strategy for tackling your stress levels, try some of these helpful tips made especially for males suffering from too much stress.
The thing about stress and men is that some may not realize when their stress levels are taking over their life and priorities. Whether in denial about the situation or being completely clueless, many men don’t take their stress management seriously. This can actually manifest itself in negative ways. Chronic stress in men has been medically proven to result in decreased immune function and an inability to fight infection or repair tissue, as well as increase the risk for infection. For men who have been experiencing stress over long periods of time, the odds of developing poor health or developing an illness increases.
This is why stress management for men is so important. If left untreated, male symptoms of stress can result in more than just physical ailments. The most common signs a man is stressed out include being unusually quiet, keeping emotions and feelings bottled up, excessive eating and/or drinking, ignores friends and family, quick temper, more irritable.
The first step is to breathe. Many men breathe shallowly but by taking time to pause and take deep breaths, you can calm your nerves, focus your mind and calm down faster. Next, realize that the things causing your stress are not threats to you but rather, situations you can handle. Many men let their problems overwhelm them to the point where they view everything pessimistically. Analyze what is causing your stress and instead of letting it eat at you, be positive and strategize what steps you need to take to offset it. When life starts to weigh you down, schedule a fun, physical activity or go out and unwind. This can include going out to watch a sports game, playing in one or even kicking back and watching a movie. However you decide to release your stress make sure it is something you want to do. If you need personal time to do this, communicate that to your significant other.
Exercising can also be a positive way to push stress out of your mind. When you’ve physically exerted yourself, the last thing on your mind is whatever is troubling you. Many men can find relief in jogging, doing pushups, lifting weights, or swimming. Follow that up with a nice shower and a healthy meal and you’ll be able to take on anything.
Avoid excessive drinking and/or smoking. While these may seem to make your stress go away, it actually harms your body, which can add to the physical strain that stress can cause. Instead, turn to water, fruit juices or smoothies and lay off the smoking. When your mind and body feel good, your mental clarity will improve as well.
