Road Map Relief PDF Print E-mail

I sometimes tease my husband because the back of his legs look like the little lines on a road map. He recently took a trip to Africa to help film a documentary, so before he left, I made a batch of Road Map Relief in the hopes that it would help keep his skin moisturized in the heat of the desert sun. He reported back that it worked like a charm, so if you have road maps, this may be the cure for you too!

This aromatic oil blend is one of my husband's favorite blends; some skin types may be irritated by cinnamon and nutmeg, so feel free to substitute your own favorites.

Ingredients:
10 grams beeswax
2 grams stearic
50 grams shea butter
62 grams coconut oil (refined)
62 grams olive oil (I used extra virgin)
100 grams distilled water
16 grams vegetable glycerin
8 grams borax
8 grams grapefruit seed extract (optional to extend shelf life)
20 drops mandarin essential oil
12 drops cinnamon leaf essential oil
10 drops cedar essential oil
2 drops nutmeg essential oil

Blending Procedure:

  1. Combine first 5 ingredients in a heat proof (I use Pyrex) 16 oz. glass measuring cup. Place the mixture in a hot water bath until the waxes are completely melted. Remove from heat.

  2. In a separate Pyrex cup, combine all other ingredients, except the aromatics oils. Place the mixture in a bath until for about 10 minutes to warm the mix and dissolve the borax. (The borax will not dissolve completely until you stir it in; see Step 4.) Remove from heat.

  3. Stir the oils/waxes together to make sure they are evenly combined.

  4. In the separate container, stir the water ingredients to make sure they are evenly combined.

  5. Begin stirring the oil/wax mixture with an electric mixer and add the water mixture as you stir. You will see the mixture begin to thicken as you blend it. Continue mixing until until Road Map Relief is thick and rich. This may take up to 20 minutes. Add the aromatic oils after the lotion forms and stir gently to incorporate. Pour into clean bottles. I like to use plastic with a flip top lid for easy dispensing.

  6. Store in the fridge between uses if you'd like to extend freshness.
