Male Skin Ages, Too!Even though most men won’t admit it, they are just as fearful of not only getting older, but looking older as well. As obsessed as women are about skincare and anti-aging matters, we sometimes forget that male skin ages as well. While the signs of aging occur for both sexes, men have their own aging battles to deal with when it comes to maintaining their youthful appearance.

A recent survey showed that more than 50% of men consider the appearance of liver spots (also called age spots and sun spots) as a sign that makes them look older (and not in a classy or distinguished way, either). Hyperpigmentation is one culprit that makes itself known on male skin. Most men experience uneven skin tone due to hyperpigmentation during their early 20s and is typically a result of too many years of excessive sun exposure. However, there are treatments that can be effective in reversing this unsightly condition. With the right products, any man can achieve a healthier, younger-looking complexion.

An obvious first step is to gently exfoliate. Not only does exfoliating get rid of layers of dead skin cells, it also helps to pave the way for newer, revitalized cells. As the saying goes, “out with the old and in with the new.” Sporting a complexion of new skin cell layers is an instant way to introduce the newer, younger you. To take treatment up a notch, you can also turn to skin fading products. Dermatologists usually recommend products with potent ingredients. Retinol in 1-4% concentrations is one of them. Other popular ingredients used in treating uneven skin tone and age spots include vitamin C and Kojic Acid, which work to even out the discoloration.

While using such skin fading products, it is important to stay out of the sun. In order to allow the treatment to work properly, your skin shouldn’t produce more pigmentation, which would defeat the purpose of the treatment. Most dermatologists advise practicing diligent sun care through the use of sunscreen for the first few weeks. Once the skin’s pigmentation is back to normal, the superficial skin cells will be replaced by the new, natural ones.

Wrinkles around the eyes are usually not as noticeable on men as they are on women, but that doesn’t mean they look any better. Most men don’t realize that early prevention can make all the difference in the appearance of their eye area years ahead. If you haven’t done so already, start using a moisturizing and nourishing eye cream to treat existing fine lines and wrinkles as well as prevent new ones from occurring.

Gravity hits men as well when it comes to sagging, drooping skin. These commonly appear around the male jaw line and under the chin/throat area. Just short of getting surgery, there isn’t a 100% method to tackling this type of problem area. Sorry, fellas!

The bottom line? While men and women are distinctly different in many ways, when it comes to the aging process and its effect on us physically, the guys do share our pain, even if they don’t always show it.
