Just because men don’t have as much hair as women do, doesn’t mean that hair care isn’t important. It doesn’t matter if you’ve got a buzz cut or have locks that touch your shoulders, all men can benefit from a little know-how when it comes to their hair. And these steps don’t require a lot of effort or time so you don’t have to worry about rearranging your busy schedule.
Regardless of your hair type, it is important to use a shampoo that is gentle on your hair. Ingredients such as vitamin E are great for naturally strengthening and conditioning the hair follicles. Don’t be fooled by super fragrant shampoos, either. Be sure to read the labels, as these types of hair products can contain artificial ingredients that don’t do much for your locks, except bathe them in a strong scent. Botanicals are good, but be sure that the ingredients contain more natural properties and not a combination of crazy formulations and ingredients with names you can’t pronounce. When washing every day, you can put stress on the hair, even with the gentlest of shampoos so don’t go overboard and avoid washing more than once a day, unless your hair is really dirty. Over washing can put unnecessary stress on the follicles, resulting in breakage and weak strands. It can also cause the scalp to become oilier, since it will try to make up for the loss of moisture from over washing. If you can, stick to washing every other day. This will be especially beneficial to men with fine hair or thinning hair. Make sure you rinse out all of the shampoo with cool water. Leaving any shampoo on the scalp can cause harmful buildup.
Dry and weak hair types can benefit from using a good conditioner to help strengthen the locks. As with shampoo, be sure to use only gentle hair care products and rinse the conditioner completely from your scalp and hair. When participating in outdoor activities proper hair care is also needed. After swimming in a pool or at the beach, rinse your hair with cool and clean water to prevent dehydration of the follicles or breakage.
Just like the female counterparts, regular trims are also in order for proper male hair care. In addition to helping to stimulate new hair cells, your hair will look cleaner and healthier (split ends are definitely unattractive!). Oily hair types should stick to shorter styles that keep the hair out of the face and forehead. Doing otherwise can make your complexion prone to breakouts. Keep all hair tools (combs, brushes) clean and replace them as needed.
If you’re worried about losing your hair or if your locks are starting to thin out, visit your barber or other hair care professional and ask for a recommendation for a new hairstyle. No one can get away with a comb-over these days, and there are more than enough styles to choose from that will allow you to look your best. Bring photos for reference if there is a particular style you think may look good on you.
