Take a Closer Look at Your Shaving HabitsFor men with sensitive skin, razor burn can be a painful problem. It burns. It stings. And it itches enough to drive you crazy. Even one case of razor burn is enough for us to change our shaving products. And while there are many products on the market designed for sensitive skin, the cause of your discomfort may be how you shave – not what you shave with.

First of all, make shaving a regular part of your daily routine. Avoid taking days off from shaving or shaving at different times – your skin doesn’t appreciate surprises or react well to them. And if you shave in the morning, give your skin some time to adjust to being awake before you subject it to your razor. Brew a pot of coffee, eat some breakfast (it’s the most important meal of the day) – then shave. And no matter what type of razor you use, be gentle! If you need to press hard to get a close shave, you need a new razor.

Now let’s take a closer look at technique.

Conventional Razors

If you shave with water and a traditional or multi-blade razor cartridge, here are some tips to a close comfortable shave:

·    Heat is your friend. Use hot water to soak your beard before you shave. Or take a shower first. The hot water will soften the hairs on your face so they can be cut easier with less pulling. Your face will thank you.

·    Let your shaving products work for you. Regardless of whether you use a gel or cream or even an old fashioned shaving soap, give the lather some time on your beard before you start shaving. These products work with the hot water to further soften your beard for cutting. Most products also include ingredients that will soothe your skin in the process.

·    Shave with the grain. No matter what your father may have told you, shaving against the grain is not the way to go. It irritates the skin and is the chief cause of razor burn.

·    Rinse with cold water. Cold water will tighten your pores and help your skin recover from shaving. Use an alcohol-free aftershave or moisturizer to soothe your skin and protect it for the day ahead.

·    Use a new blade! The second most common cause of razor burn is using a dull razor that pulls the hairs as it cuts. This can also tempt you to bear down more forcefully as you shave. Don’t do it! Change your blade instead.

Electric Razors

·    Many men may turn to electric razors as a reprieve from the trauma f scraping a sharp blade across their face every morning. Electric razors can be a great alternative, but they can also result in razor burn if you’re not careful

·    Don’t buy a cheap razor. After all, you’re going to be using it every day. Look for a reputable high-quality product with a swivel or pivot head that can adjust to the contours of your face.

·    Dry your skin thoroughly. Unless your electric razor is one designed to be used wet, a dry face is your best defense against razor burn. If your face is moist or wet, the head of the razor can stick to your skin and cause discomfort.

·    Be gentle. Don’t push too hard with the razor and don’t stretch your skin too tightly with your free hand. Remember, razor burn is the result of trauma to your skin, so don’t add to it by being to forceful.

·    Rinse with cold water and use an alcohol-free aftershave – the benefits are the same as when wet shaving.

·    Maintain your razor. Clean and replace the cutting blades in your razor regularly. Even though you don’t see them, they can get dull just like a conventional razor – and pull your skin the same way.
