The Reasons Today, it’s not all that uncommon for a man to consider having their breasts reduce. While reducing the breasts might not be for the same reasons as a woman’s it can certainly raise an eyebrow or two and leave us asking, why? For some men obesity would be the answer, but surprisingly for most it’s because of a condition known as Gynecomastia.
Gynecomastia takes place when the male’s breast tissue enlarges and hormonal changes are taking place. It has nothing to do with being overweight and it’s not a new development either. It is however something that is taking on a rapid concern with men everywhere.
Medical studies have shown that the tissue found in men’s breasts from this condition is identical to the tissue normally found in women’s breasts. Because of this, a male’s breasts will look very much like a female’s, causing embarrassment, low-self esteem and even depression. Whether you’re choosing breast reduction for an overweight condition, Gynecomastia or another reason, knowing what’s involved in the procedure and what risks there are can help you make a final decision of whether breast reduction surgery is right for you.
BeforeYour first visit before considering a breast reduction will be a consultation with the plastic surgeon that will be performing the procedure. During the consultation your surgeon will go over the procedure with you and answer any questions or concerns you may have. Your surgeon will also take a look at your age, health and medical history, your tolerance for certain medications you make have to take to decide whether or not you’re a good candidate for this type of procedure. At this time he or she may also ask you to give up smoking until after recovery. Your surgeon should also provide your with a set of instruction on preparing for your surgery.
Most breast reduction surgeries are performed as an outpatient procedure unless your surgeon feels there is a cause for concern and asks that you stay overnight in the hospital. Usually the surgery only takes a couple of hours and a general anesthesia is given.
DuringDuring the surgery any excess fat is removed using liposuction and any excess tissue is removed through an incision made with a scalpel. The incision is usually made in an inconspicuous area such as the edge of the nipple or under the arm. If an extremely large amount of tissue is to be removed, a more conspicuous incision may be the result. Once the incisions are closed, your surgeon will cover them in a dressing and he or she may choose to wrap the chest as well.
AfterYou will feel some discomfort for the first few days after your surgery and will need to wear a pressure garment to reduce swelling. You will also be advised to take a few days off from work and avoid any strenuous activity (including sex) for the next few weeks. After two weeks your surgeon will remove your stitches. You will want to avoid exposing your scars to the sun for six months and any final results from your breast reduction will probably not be apparent for at least three months or more.
The Risks As with every surgery, there are risks. Complications are minor with this type of surgery, but infections, excessive bleeding, fluid loss can occur as with any procedure. Loss of sensation or numbness to the breast can occur. Also there may be noticeable scarring, odd sized breasts or nipples. Usually if the breasts or nipples are of odd size shape, a second surgery may be needed to correct this.
If you have decided that breast reduction surgery is an option for you, be sure to find a plastic surgeon who is certified before you proceed. Do your research, ask your questions and most importantly, stay safe!
