New mammography system developed PDF Print E-mail
US and German scientists have developed a new ultra-high resolution mammography system to detect cancer tumors. Developed by Jacqueline Johnson, a materials scientist at the US Department of Energy's Argonne National Laboratory, in collaboration with Rick Lubinsky from New York and Stefan Schweizer from Germany, this system was recently given an R&D 100 award.
Highlights of the Ultra-High Resolution Mammography System
a. This system offers higher-quality images, more efficient radiation exposures and lower cost.
b. It uses a transparent glass-ceramic plate, which lessens light scattering.
c. It has a readout device to increase the efficiency of the glass-ceramic material.
d. The plates are made from a photostimulable phosphor, which is reusable, has wide dynamic range and direct digitization.
e. It reduces the amount of chemicals used and the amount of waste produced.
