The US Food and Drug Administration has cleared Boston based TEI Biosciences Inc.'s SurgiMend for the market. This clearance has paved the way for the use of the product in plastic and reconstructive surgery, including breast reconstruction, and for tendon augmentation. Earlier, it was used for hernia repair, muscle flap and other soft tissue repair.
a. This is an a cellular, terminally sterilized biologic matrix meant for soft tissue reconstruction. b. It is derived from the dermis of fetal calves. c. It is strong yet soft. d. It becomes pliable when it is hydrated. e. It can be easily handled just like natural tissue. f. It can be easily attached to the surgical site sutured. g. It contains Type III collagen, which speeds up the healing process of the tissues. h. It is 100 per cent natural. i. It is capable of rapid cell penetration, revascularization and integration with host tissues. j. It is available in both large and small sizes. k. It can be stored in a dry place at room temperature for up to three years.
