Study says laser-assisted breast reduction is safer alternative PDF Print E-mail
A recent study led by Dr. Grant Stevens, Medical Director of Marina Plastic Surgery in Southern California, has found that laser assisted breast reduction surgery is a better alternative to traditional breast reduction surgical procedures. This study, which is the largest of its kind in which researchers reviewed 367 consecutive laser-assisted breast reduction procedures, was published in the Aesthetic Surgery Journal.
Study Highlights
a. Researchers studied the feasibility of the use of laser for the Deepithelialization process during breast reduction surgery.
b. Deepithelialization is the process of preparation of the excess skin that remains that remains during breast reduction surgeries so that it grows together with adjacent skin around the surgical area.
c. Researchers used a continuous mode carbon dioxide laser.
d. This laser delivers a solid laser beam across the skin.
e. It enables surgeons to perform a continuous and accurate deepithelialization of the treatment area.
f. Researchers studied 367 consecutive laser-assisted breast reduction procedures performed over a 10-year period.
g. They also assessed some associated complications like incidence of hematoma, infection rate, breakdown of incision sites and need for blood transfusion.
h. It was seen that the overall complication rate dropped to 11 per cent as against 10 per cent to 43 per cent traditional methods.

Conclusion

a. It was seen that laser-assisted surgery reduces the time of the deepithelialization process.
b. It enables a consistent preparation of the deepitheialized skin.
c. It ensures that there is less blood loss than in traditional method.
d. It ensures that breast tissue is not tightly stretched.
e. It reduces recovery time and complications.
f. It was concluded that the laser-assisted procedure is a safer and more effective alternative to traditional breast reduction techniques.
