Grapefruit linked to breast cancer PDF Print E-mail

Consuming grapefruit daily can cause breast cancer. This was proven by a recent study conducted by universities of Southern California and Hawaii on 50,000 post-menopausal women. However, the intake of grapefruit juice was not taken into consideration. Researchers say that further research is needed before any conclusion can be drawn.

Study Highlights
a. Women who eat a quarter grapefruit daily increase their risk of developing breast cancer.
b. The risk increases by almost 30 per cent.
c. This is because grapefruit stimulates the production of estrogen in the body.
d. Grapefruits inhibit a molecule called cytochrome P450 3A4, which metabolizes the estrogen in blood.
