Breast implant patients are suicidal, says study

According to a recent study, women with cosmetic breast implants exhibit an increased risk for suicidal tendencies. The results of this study, which was conducted by researchers at the International Epidemiology Institute in Rockville, Md., Vanderbilt University in Nashville,TN; and the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden was published in the current issue of the Annals of Plastic Surgery. Researchers of this study recommended that doctors should screen women before breast implant procedures and regularly conduct post-surgical follow-ups as a preventative measure.

Study Findings

a. Researchers studied the suicide rates for 3,527 Swedish women with breast implants.
b. They were tracked over a period of 8 years.
c. It was seen that 175 women out of the group committed suicide.
d. It was found that there was a 3-fold increase in deaths related to suicide, alcohol and drugs.
e. It was also seen that women with breast implants were prone to deaths related to injuries and accidents.
f. The increased risk is apparent only after 10 years after implantation.
g. Women with breast implants also increased their chances of getting lung cancer and chronic respiratory disease.
