New test to detect silicone implant leakage PDF Print E-mail

Silicon breast implant patients have to undergo magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) every two years to detect leakage or rupture as per FDA guidelines. However, MRI technique is not foolproof and, at times, leaky implants might be missed. Now, Canadian researchers are trying to develop a cheap and easy blood test to detect leaky implants. Researchers from The University of British Columbia have designed a fast method to detect leakage events.

Test Highlights
a. This is a non-invasive test.
b. In this test, a stable synthetic tracer molecule added to silicone breast implant filler is detected in a patient's hair, blood or urine, if there is any leakage or rupture.
c. It is highly effective and accessible.
d. It is cost effective.
e. It reduces the associated health risks of silicon implants.
