Lip Gloss and Cancer: What’s the Link PDF Print E-mail
According to an article published today some dermatologists say that lip gloss can increase the risk of skin cancer. The articles noted that lip gloss without SPF (sun protection factor) may be inviting the harmful rays of the sun to penetrate the outer layer of the skin.

Apparently there are an estimated 3,500 new cases of skin cancer affecting the lips in the USA annually. The MSNBC article also said that sun exposure can result in ‘non-cancerous disfigurements on your lips.’  Lip gloss, one of the experts noted, ‘squashes the natural protective layer of the lip’ making it easier for the sun’s rays to penetrate the top layer of the lips.

 

In addition to the risk of developing cancer which can be life threatening, sun exposure can accelerate the aging process on lips. This makes lips thin and more likely to develop brown age spots.

 

However, not every dermatologist agrees with the lip gloss/cancer thesis.
