You may have looked in the mirror and wondered why and how your pores got so huge. Contrary to popular belief, there is no way to physically shrink enlarged pores but that doesn’t mean that all hope is lost. With a few skincare steps and a little know-how, you’ll be able to hide your large pores and pay attention to the rest of your beauty routine.
What exactly do large pores look like? If you look closely in the mirror, you’ll notice that on your nose and the surrounding areas, there are little holes that appear on the surface of your skin. When your pores are clogged, these holes appear much larger and often have little whiteheads or blackheads on top. When oil, dirt and other surface debris gather on your skin, they immediately gather inside of your pores, resulting in an enlarged appearance. Aside from dirt causing the appearance of enlarged pores, genetics can also be a cause. While there are many home remedies and skincare products that claim to magically shrink pores, it is important to know that it is physically impossible to make large pores become smaller. However, it is possible to make enlarged pores appear smaller. One way to take emphasis away from enlarged pores is by unclogging them so that they visibly appear smaller. The easiest way to do this is through exfoliation. You can try a grainy exfoliating cleanser that will gently polish off layers of dead skin cells and remove any remaining dirt, oil and debris from your pores. Look for exfoliating cleansers than contain ground almonds, oats or orange peels. There are also special mud masks that can be applied once a week to tighten and clear out your pores. Be sure to choose a mud mask that makes your complexion resilient. Anti-oxidant serums can also be purchased to increase the skin’s collagen and elastin, which makes for smoother skin.
Other options for taking the size out of your pores include facials and microdermabrasion. Receiving a deep-pore cleaning facial at a day spa helps clear out your pores completely, as well as the chance to remove any unsightly whiteheads or blackheads. Microdermabrasion can be done at home or at a day spa by a licensed esthetician. By gently blasting layers of dead skin, you’ll be left with clean, open pores that are visibly less noticeable. The way you apply your makeup can also affect the way your enlarged pores look. Try applying makeup primer on areas where your pores appear enlarged. By doing this, any skin irregularities will be smoothed over, making large pores less visible and keeping your foundation from getting into your pores and clogging them. When it comes to foundation, only use a non-comedogenic type that won’t clog your pores upon application. Try to avoid putting foundation on areas where you are experiencing large pores. If that can’t be done, then apply the foundation with a sponge or other applicator and use downward strokes. Upward strokes can actually push the makeup into your pores, clogging them and enhancing their appearance. Powder foundation works best in these cases.
