If you’ve experimented with eye makeup only to have terrible results, maybe it’s due to the fact that you aren’t taking your eyelid shape into consideration. Many women are unaware of the fact that eyelids, just like the body, hair and just about anything on the human body, comes in different shapes and varies from person to person. That being said, knowing your eyelid shape can help you when it comes to applying eye makeup and getting it right the first time.
It’s important to know your eyelid shape in particular because this will help you decide which part you should shade or highlight using makeup. In order to figure out what shape your eyelid is, simply go in front of a mirror and stare at yourself straight on, no angles. Pay attention to the area between your upper lashes and your brow bone. There are three general types of eyelid shapes: hooded, prominent and deep set.
Hooded eyelids occur when you can’t see your eyelids very much. If you’ve got this eyelid shape, then you’ll want to use an eye makeup technique that creates the illusion of a more prominent eyelid. You can achieve this by applying a highlighter on the eyelid to make it appear larger. Next, shade just the crease of your eye and spread the eye shadow outwards towards the corner of your eye. To add onto this technique, you can also use liner to draw a thin line on the top lash and smudge if necessary. Then apply a coat of black mascara to just the upper lashes. Be sure to blend the eye shadow as you get up to the brow.
Prominent eyelids basically mean that there is a lot of eyelid. The trick here is to make the eyes appear larger to balance out the prominent area of the eyelid. Do this by sticking to medium and dark shades of eye shadow on the eyelids to make them appear smaller. Don’t forget to blend well into the crease and on the eyelid. Now use eyeliner across the entire upper lash line from corner to corner and finish with mascara. The smoky eye look goes great with prominent eyelids. Be sure to avoid frosty or metallic eye shadow colors, since this will only enhance the larger area of the eyelid. Also use a highlighter on just the area below the eyebrow and not the actual eyelid. Those with deep set eyelids occur with deep set eyes. In this case, the eyelid is visible on the outer corners of the eye but then gradually narrows as it gets to the inside corner. This eyelid shape tends to be the most open in terms of eye makeup but for starters, it helps to have your eyebrows groomed in a slightly upwards shape. When it comes to eye shadow colors, use pale shades around the eye area to enhance them. When using eyeliner, line the lower eyelid and extend the line up and outwards. There is no need to shade the crease of your eyelid, so stick to light colors and a highlighter above the crease. You can also use a slightly darker shade to outline your eyes. A couple coats of mascara will finish the look.
