How to Make your Makeup Match your ClothesAbstract patterns and bright, bold colors are hot on the fashion scene. Take another look and you’ll see the sleek lines of black and white clothing and accessories. And what about casual weekend wear and your Sunday best – how do you match your makeup with your ever-changing style? Look to the pages of fashion mags for the answer.

It used to be that if your clothes made a statement, your makeup tended to be subdued so you didn’t resemble a circus clown. Today’s makeup style has changed and it is equally as vibrant as your clothes. The trick is knowing which colors to punch up and which tone down. If you’re wearing graphic prints, let your most vivid piece of clothing set the palate for your makeup. Use the lightest shade as your eye and cheek accent color – you’re choosing whites, sands, pinks and shell tones here. For your crease or lid color look to the darkest shades. These can also be your liner color depending on how you dress you eyes. Mascara is all gloss black this summer when wearing high-impact colors or prints. Lips are either in a soft shade of your accent color or just nude with a swipe of balm to keep them looking healthy.

For bright, solid color dresses choose a palate of colors in the same family as your clothing. The eyes are really the focal point when wearing blocks of bright color. Choose a crease and lid color that draws attention in a perfect line from your dress to your face. Go easy (if any at all) with the highlight color along your brown bone. Choose lip and cheek colors that blend well with each other and are lighter than your eyes makeup so that anyone looking at you isn’t repeatedly stopped by bright colors all the way up your face.

For the hobo look that is so hot this summer, go wild with eye colors in the pink, violet and blue-green families. Eye colors can be pulled below the lower lid and extend above the crease for a Kate Moss look. Go easy (if any) on the mascara. Use liner in the same or a similar shade as your shadow for definition. Cheeks can be either pale or punched up with blush is the same pink/red family as your lips. Lips are also anywhere from totally bare to medium bright with color – think Molly Ringwald.

For casual wear from jeans and a T to a loose silk cami, the look you want comes from eyes that pop with black liner and black mascara. Color is faint everywhere else. Go for a bit of shine on your lips and along your brow bone.

Black and white is back again and it’s paying tribute to your lips. No matter the combination – white on top, black on top or both – this combination makes bright, bold lip color a knock out look. Stick with colors that are not pink or rosy or brown; you want reds! Eye color is limited to black liner and light mascara. Highlight color should be white and crease and cheek color should be as close to your natural skin tone as possible.
