It used to be that if you wore any makeup to the pool or the beach you were looked at as someone who was there just to be seen. It was also impossible for you to enjoy yourself because your makeup was sweating off your face or running down your cheeks as soon as you hit the water. Times have changed and now makeup – in totally moderation and containing SPF – is as much a part of swimwear as your suit. In fact, your makeup can take your suit and how you look in it from great to phenomenal.
Makeup that rocks your suit is simple – it has to be or you look like “one of those girls.” The key is color. For lips, you want it to match your suit perfectly and be subtle enough to cause a second look to see if you’re really wearing any at all. For eyes, you want it to match your skin tone. For cheeks, you’re going for sun kissed in shades that make it look like the sun was made to color only you.
Start with the lips. They are the featured feature this season. No matter what style your swimsuit is you can wear lip color anywhere you wear you suit. If you’re wearing a color that is “natural,” meaning some variation of it could actually be the color of someone’s lips when they’re wearing no lipstick at all, then go with that as your lipstick color. We’re talking about reds, pinks, peach, apricot, pale browns and even some oranges. If your suit is black you can go with pale reds or shades of coral. If you’re wearing neon colors, blue, green, yellow or any other “unnatural” lip color stay in the corals. These are sunny colors that capture natural light from the sun and natural highlights on tan skin. Gold is a risky color but if you are subtle and there’s not too much shimmer, you can pull it off. When in doubt, go with coral.
Eyes. Too much color here and you’re no longer rocking your au natural look. The best choice is to go with a light coat of waterproof gloss mascara. If you must, sweep just a hint of waterproof shimmer across your lids in a color that matches either your eye color or your natural skin tone. Stick to the lids only. Eye shadow should be barely there when you’re wearing a swimsuit. Cheeks can be covered in a tinted moisturizer with SPF (always a good idea to add more SPF) or dabbed with liquid mousse in a color that resembles your flushed face after a day in the sun or a good run. Choose liquid blush so it won’t cake. Mineral makeup gives sweaty skin a nice glow without the look of thick makeup. You don’t need much, if any, cheek color as cheeks are the first part of your face to show color from the sun.
