Hippie-Chic Looks of the 60’s on Summer ’08 FacesThe Summer of Love is back as, once more, everything old is reborn to become new again. This time, the free spirit of the 60’s seen on runways and at hot spots all over the world is showing up not only in fashion, but on the hippie-chic faces of trendy summer models, vacationers and everyday girls like you and me. This look captures both the electric shocks of bright color and the love of “go-nude” that made that era so memorable.

The first mark of hippie-chic is bold color and, in particular, bright blue. Blue eye shadow makes a confident statement that you can handle the attention this look demands. Blue can go with any eye color and skin tone. The trick is finding the shade right for you. One way is to determine whether your skin looks best in warm tones (orange, deep red, brown), cool tones (blue, bright red, yellow) or neutrals (beige, cream, soft browns). Then try a blue that falls into the same category. Don’t be afraid to try turquoise, baby blue or electric blue. You won’t know what looks great until you try it! Another trick is to simply choose a makeup palate of the same tone regardless of your skin tone. Most times, if you keep all the colors on your face in the same family of shades it will work nicely.

If hey-look-at-me isn’t quite your thing, try eyeliner instead of shadow. You’ll have more control of the color and just as many choices. Smudging makes liner a great choice for those less dramatic types and for the office. Apply liner to the middle of your top lid to open up your eyes. Extend the color away and slightly curved upward from the outer corner of your top lid for a striking, yet understated look.

And, of course, the look could not be truly hippie if there wasn’t something nude! Perhaps less countercultural is to limit this to just your lips. Hippie-chic focuses attention on the eyes first, the rosy pink cheeks second, and nude lips last but certainly not least. For those with already pouty lips, all you need is a little clear lip balm and you’re good to go. For those who prefer liner to shape your smile, go for anything in the nude or neutral shades. An easy and fool proof way to choose the perfect nude liner is to determine the undertone colors of your lips. To do this, hold a swatch of solid color under your bottom lip. With lips gently pressed together, switch color swatches and notice the changes to your lip color. Some shades will drain the color from your lips while others will make them pop. Go for the color that makes them look most defined.

So throw on your tie-dyed Flower Power T-shirt and hot pants and hit the streets in hippie-chic.
