While the demand for cosmetic surgery procedures grow, there is increasing danger of patients falling prey to deceptive marketing. The British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) is making it clear that these practices are unacceptable. Reports online quote the organization as being “increasingly concerned” about the methods used in promotions. President of BAAPS, Douglas McGeorge, was quoted as saying, “Surgery is a serious undertaking which requires realistic expectations and should only proceed after proper consultation with a reputable and properly qualified clinician…” He went on to say that BAAPS was especially worried about younger, more vulnerable individuals, who were the primary focus of these ads.
The organization is in fact creating its own promotion, attempting to educate prospective plastic surgery patients about choosing the right plastic surgeon. With no regulatory power, BAAPS can take no action against the guilty parties. Currently BAAPS represents roughly a third of all plastic surgeons in the UK.
