Christmas crime wave to target perfumes and cosmetics PDF Print E-mail

[cosmeticsdesign-europe.com] UK retailers should brace themselves for a Christmas crime wave of cosmetic and perfume products, illustrating a greater need for electronic tagging systems.

More than 105, 000 incidents of theft will occur in the UK during the four week period up to Christmas, totalling ₤431.2m (€605m), according to Checkpoint Systems, a manufacturer of tracking and security systems for consumer goods.

According to the research this is more than a 200 percent increase in incidents that would occur in a normal four week period.

The study warns that ₤2.93m worth of products will be lost in every hour of trading during this period, meaning that on the busiest shopping day of the year, Saturday 22 December, stores can collectively expect to lose ₤26.4m worth of products to shoplifters.

According to Checkpoint Systems the products most likely to be targeted in the festive shoplifting are perfumes, cosmetics, alcohol, women's wear and electronic media.

This significant figure highlights the need to improve in-store security and tagging systems to reduce costs that are shouldered by consumers, manufacturer and retailers alike.

The research follows a similar report also funded by Checkpoint Systems released last month reporting that the UK had the highest level of retail crime in the whole of Europe in the 12 months prior to June 2007.

The report also found that two fifths of stock was not protected by tags or other security measures and the company expects large retailers to respond to security issues by investing in source tag technology.
