What is breast reduction surgery?

Breast reduction surgery (also known as reduction mammaplasty) is where excess skin & tissue are removed from the the breast to reduce the size of the breast.

Why may breast reduction surgery be necessary?

Excessively large breasts can cause a number of medical problems:

- back and neck pain
- poor posture
- skin irritation
- infections (intertrigo)
- shortness of breath/poor exercise tolerance
- social embarrassment

Possible complications of breast reduction surgery

- keloid scarring
- bleeding
- infection
- mismatched breast size
- asymmetric nipple positioning
- loss of sensation around nipples
- breastfeeding may not be possible

Although the procedure does leave permanent scars, they will be covered by your bra or bathing suit. Poor healing and wider scars are more common in smokers.
