TUMMY TUCK SURGERY (ABDOMINOPLASTY)

What is a tummy tuck?

Tummy tuck surgery, also known as an abdominoplasty, is an operation to remove excess fat and skin from the abdomen. The aim of a tummy tuck is to produce a tighter, flatter stomach.

What is involved with tummy tuck surgery?

A cut is made above the pubic hair towards your hips, & another cut is made at your umbilicus. Excess skin & fat from below the umbilicus is pulled down and cut off. Surgery requires a general anaesthetic.

Who can have a tummy tuck procedure?

Individuals with excess abdominal skin and fat may be suitable for abdominoplasty.

Are there any risks?

Potential complications of a tummy tuck include:

- bruising, swelling and bleeding
- scarring
- delayed wound healing
- umbilical loss (loss of belly button)
- dog-ears (folds of skin at the ends of the scar)
- fluid collection
- poor position of the umbilicus
- tingling or numbness down the thigh (nerve injury)

Swelling and numbness of the abdominal wall for several weeks are common. Wound healing complications are increased in smokers and in people who are overweight.

How long will I be off work after a tummy tuck procedure?

You will be in hospital for 3-5 days, and your mobility will be limited for 2-4 weeks.

How much does a tummy tuck cost?

A mini tummy tuck costs £3000-£5000. A full tummy tuck costs £4000- £6000.
