Q I have an allergy to latex, and all the makeup sponges are made from latex, so I have to put on my foundation and concealer with my fingers. Do you have any other suggestions for me? I thought if anybody would know, you would. Carla, Lakeland

A. Easy-peasy! There are two very simple solutions designed to make your life easier and your face more lovely.

First, there are non-latex makeup wedges out there. They are becoming easier to find in neighborhood health and beauty stores. The packages actually state when they are non-latex. If it doesn't say so in nice big letters on the front of the bag, best to assume it is latex.

If you cannot find non-latex sponges in your local drug store, then try professional stores, such as Sally's or any store that bills itself as "beauty supply."

Still no luck? Go for a foundation brush. They can give you a smooth, flawless application. Look for these at beauty supply stores or high-end makeup shops like MAC or Bobbie Brown or at the beauty superstore Sephora. Many of these shops are also available online.

AND SPEAKING OF MAKEUP ALlERGIES ...

So many people have experienced apparent allergic reactions to their cosmetics. This is a very common occurrence. Often the culprits are perfumes (about 10 percent of women find they are allergic to cosmetic fragrances). Other problem children are often chemicals used as preservatives and humectants, such as propylene glycol, and oils, and of course latex. Latex can be found not only in sponges but also in eyelash glue.

Basically, if you find yourself suffering from itching, burning, rashes, acne or even blisters or scabs, stop using all suspect products and seek out a dermatologist.

To try really hard not to repeat such problems, here are a few tips.

Always make sure you keep conditions on and around your makeup as sanitary as possible. Look for the word "hypoallergenic."

What many do not know is that this word has no legal or Food and Drug Administration meaning.

It does mean (usually) that the cosmetics companies (especially the well-respected ones) are making best efforts to remove allergy-triggering ingredients from their products.

Next, DO NOT share makeup! You might as well rub your face all over the hands and face of the other person. Eeeeeuw!

And finally, don't use products on your face that were not meant for skin.

HOME GIRLS

Now, for the last bit of my trip to New York City. I just wanted to say "hey" to several ladies who were vacationing at the same time as me. There were four gals on the flight who, as we landed, were hootin' and hollerin' "Redneck girls take New York!" And as fellow passengers laughed along and asked "Where are you comin' from?" The loud and proud reply came "Wauchula!," which made the plane laugh that much louder. Then there were the ladies who were standing in line with me at "The Morning Show With Mike And Juliet" who were from Plant City. I fly 1,000 miles and end up taking more of home along with me than I could fit in my suitcase. So, ladies ... "HEY!"
