Summary Box: Cosmetics of cancer surgery

(AP) — THE ISSUE: Breast cancer surgery often leaves cosmetic defects, and a study finds that many doctors don't discuss it with their patients.

THE CHOICES: A mastectomy removes the whole breast, but leaves reconstruction options, such as artificial implants. A lumpectomy removes just the tumor but can deform the breast with fewer cosmetic choices.

THE SOLUTION: Women and doctors should talk about reconstruction, possibly consulting a plastic surgeon.
