"Organic" vs. "natural" PDF Print E-mail

There is no federal definition for "organic" or "natural" cosmetics. However, "organic" and "natural" do not mean the same thing as it pertains to food.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service regulates the term "natural" on meat and poultry labels. The food safety group says products can be called natural if they contain no artificial ingredient or added color and are minimally processed.

According to the National Organic Program of the USDA, "organic" food - meat, poultry, eggs and dairy products - comes from animals that have not received antibiotics or growth hormones. It says such food is produced without the use of conventional pesticides, fertilizers with synthetic ingredients or bioengineering.
