It seems that we all have features and flaws on our skin that we would rather live without than live with. But some skin imperfections, like scars, port wine stains or pigmentation fluctuations can be downright impossible to get rid of completely, without complicated and expensive surgical procedures. Since we are not all ready to go “under the knife” to get the skin we’ve always dreamed of, camouflage becomes the process of choice. There are ways to effectively diminish and hide the appearance of some of these marks and blemishes with the help of your handy dandy concealer stick.

Okay, you’ve decided that the time has come to get that flaw in your otherwise lovely complexion under cover, so you must first head to the store to select the concealer product that will best meet your needs. The good and bad news is that there are plenty of choices in concealers – good because you are much more likely to find the right product for you and bad because this large selection might get confusing rather quickly!

Just bear in mind that the thicker concealers, like those found in sticks and pots will conceal the best, but they may not go on as smoothly. By the same token, liquid concealers will spread the easiest, but will offer minimum coverage. Another option is the pencil concealer, which will offer you the chance to fine tune your cover up, making it a perfect choice for small imperfections and hard to reach spots.

Getting the Right Coverage

When it comes to using concealer properly, there are a couple of rules of thumb to follow to ensure that you end up with a natural look. First, your face will have a more natural appearance if you apply foundation to the entire face, and not just concealer to the mark that you are trying to hide. It is also best to apply concealer in thin layers, repeating the layers if necessary. This will help you to avoid the caking that a single, thick layer of concealer will result in. Always dab on concealer with a feather light touch, since rubbing the makeup will take off more than you want. Finally, we really cannot say enough about blending, whether you do it with a makeup sponge or your fingertip. Blending keeps all of your makeup looking natural and beautiful.

Generally, it is best to find a concealer that will most closely match your skin tone and foundation color. The exception here is getting those dark circles beneath your eye under wraps, where a slightly lighter shade will help the process.  Just don’t go more than a single shade lighter, or you will end up with a raccoon look around your eyes.

If there are flaws in your complexion that you would like to say farewell to, think camouflage for your skin. You may be pleasantly surprised at how easy it is to get a beautiful complexion with the proper application of a concealer product.
