Foundation had long had the stigma of looking artificial or too pink and was available in only two consistencies: liquid and crème. Modern technology has allowed for the advancement of foundation formulas for different skin types and tones and offers more natural looking coverage to achieve the look of healthy, flawless skin. Foundation can be found in eight forms:

Crème

Has a smooth and creamy texture, offers the highest amount of coverage and is best for normal to dry complexions. Can be used with a damp sponge for sheerer coverage or under the eyes or on blemishes in lieu of concealer.

Also has a creamy texture but dries to a powder finish, eliminating the need for a separate powder.     Ideal for combination and oily skin since the powder helps decrease shine.

Liquid

The most commonly found and used type and is suitable for all complexions. Available in moisturizing, oil-absorbing, oil-free and sensitive formulas and provides sheer to medium coverage.

Mousse

A crème foundation with a light, whipped consistency usually sold in jars. Provides light to sheer coverage and the light texture “sinks” into skin rather than “sitting” on top. For this reason, it’s not recommended for mature skin, since it can accentuate fine lines and wrinkles.

Pigmented Mineral Powder

Although not new to the market, it’s one of the most talked about makeup trends nowadays.  Contains natural ingredients (including vitamins and minerals such as zinc oxide) and are long lasting, weightless, fragrance free and ideal for all skin types (especially sensitive skin). Offer sheer to medium coverage and some contain a SPF.

Powder Compact

A dual-action foundation that can be used on the go. When used with a wet sponge, offers full coverage similar to liquid and cremes and when used dry, offers sheer to medium coverage. Won’t clog pores and is ideal for teenage and oily skin.

Stick

A hybrid of crème foundation and concealer and is ideal for normal to dry skin. Offers complete coverage of dark undereye circles, blemishes and ruddiness but due to its heavy consistency, needs to be blended thoroughly.

Tinted Moisturizer

Contains a hint of color and offers the sheerest coverage. Some contain a SPF, making it ideal for the summertime.

Ways to apply foundation:

·          A foundation brush – look for one made of sable hair or natural bristles.

·          Makeup sponges – best used when damp.

·          Fingers – make sure hands are thoroughly washed to avoid transferring oils and bacteria.
