The origin of enhanced cosmetics can be traced back to the mid-1980’s when dermatologists warned the public of the sun’s harmful UV rays that can lead to premature wrinkling and skin cancer. Cosmetic companies responded by adding SPF 15 to foundations to avoid the need for a separate sunscreen and foundation, but early formulas tended to be too thick, heavy or pore clogging. In the early 1990’s, SPF was added to powders and formulas evolved to having lighter textures and less oils. Today there are foundations and powders with SPF created for all skin types; these also contain other beneficial ingredients for the skin such as antioxidants, botanicals and hydrating agents. Some cosmetics that have these features include:
Foundation, Concealer and PowderToday most foundations contain at least a SPF 15, but some contain up to SPF 30. Other ingredients added to foundation include: -Light diffusers - tiny particles that reflect light instead of absorbing. These formulas are especially suitable for dry or mature skin, since it won’t settle in fine lines or wrinkles. -Antioxidant vitamins C and E – vitamin C helps with preserving collagen and vitamin E for cell renewal. -Hydrating agents – for dry skin. -Volatile silicones – produce a matte finish and are suitable for sensitive skin.
Some concealers may contain a SPF but a key ingredient nowadays is salicylic acid, which helps fight acne and reduces the redness caused by acne.
Both loose and pressed powders can contain a SPF, light diffusers and antioxidant vitamins.
Mineral Makeup Although this type has been available since the late 1970’s, mineral makeup is fast becoming a makeup must for women. Ingredients are all-natural and include mica, zinc oxide, titanium dioxide and silica. The benefits of using mineral makeup include being suitable for all skin types, talc, chemical and dye free water-resistant and creating a smooth, natural finish. Along with powder foundation, mineral makeup can be found in eye shadows, blush and even some lip-glosses.
Eye Shadow, Blush and Lip ProductsSome pressed powder eye shadows and blush now have vitamins C and E added. Crème formulas can contain hydrating agents, making them suitable for dry or mature skin.
The newest ingredient added to crème lipsticks is silk powder, which ensures a smooth application. Other ingredients include SPF 15 and hydrating agents to ward of dryness. Lip-glosses can contain vitamins A and E and aloe for conditioning.
