How does liposuction work?

	Fat removal is done using a small metal cannula (tube). The cannula is inserted through small (3-4mm) incisions. The cannula is connected to a suction machine. The smooth tip of the cannula has openings through which fat particles are removed. Depending on the area treated, liposuction can be done using local or general anesthesia.

	Liposuction can be used to treat discrete areas of fat excess. Those areas include:

	What is recovery like following liposuction?
	Patients usually go home the same day following liposuction. We use sutures that are absorbable and do not need to be removed. Many patients return to work in 5-10 days. This again depends on which areas were treated.

	Most swelling and bruising will subside within several weeks. You will be given a compression garment to wear for 3-4 weeks following liposuction. The compression garment facilitates tissue healing and resolution of swelling.
