Applying EyelinerEyeliner is a basic part of eye make-up application. When you apply eyeliner, you shape and define your eyes, while making your eyelashes look thicker. Though eyeliner is completely optional, it can help to complete your look by complimenting eye shadow and mascara application. However, if applied incorrectly, eyeliner can give you a garish appearance. Below are some general tips that will help you to apply eyeliner like a pro.

Types of Eyeliner

As with any type of make-up, eyeliner presents a whole collection of colors to choose from. Though colors can range from red and silver to green and gold, the most common and conservative choices are brown and black. These two hues can match almost any skin tone and look good with almost any shade of make-up. In addition to colors, there are many different types of eyeliner products to choose from. Your choice should be based solely on your personal preferences. Here are some of the most common types of eyeliner:

·           Eye pencils

·           Liquid liners

·           Gel eyeliners

·           Cake eyeliners

·           Powder Eyeliners

Application Techniques

To properly apply eyeliner, you will need a steady hand. If necessary, you can steady your arm by resting your elbow against a table or countertop. Once you are comfortable, begin by positioning the pencil, brush, or applicator close to the lash-line along the top of your eyelid. Then, using one smooth stroke, draw a line from the inner corner of your eye to the outer corner. Be sure to follow the curvature of your eye and keep the line as thin as possible. You can always go back and make the line thicker later on. Once your top lid has been finished, you can begin on the bottom lid. To avoid the raccoon look, outline only the outer two-thirds of your bottom lid. You will also want to make sure that the top and bottom lines meet at the back corner. As a general rule, the color and/or the line should be less intense on the bottom.

Common Mistakes

Eyeliner application takes a fair amount of practice. Until you become adept at the concept, you will probably make a few mistakes. This is fine, but if you want a flawless appearance, you should do your best to avoid them. If you need some pointers, the list below offers easy eyeliner mistakes to avoid:

·           Never apply eyeliner to the inside rim of the lid.

·           Do not use greasy pencils. They smudge easily.

·           If your eyes are small, do not apply thick eyeliner.

·           Avoid over blending eyeliner on lower lids. It may give the appearance of dark circles.
