When it comes to applying makeup, eyeliner always proves to be a challenge. It’s usually very easy to spot someone who isn’t very savvy at eyeliner application. One wrong move while applying liner and your entire makeup look can fall flat on its face. However there are some tips and tricks you can follow and practice to perfection.
Eyeliner is so important to a complete makeup look because it helps to shape and define the eyes and can even make lashes appear thicker. Before worrying about how to apply eyeliner it helps to know what kind of eyeliner will work best for you. The most common types of liner available are eye pencils. These come in both traditional size and chunky. There are also liquid, cake and powder eyeliners. All have their strengths and weaknesses so it helps to try each one and see which works best. In terms of colors, you can find eyeliner in basic black, brown and even outstanding colors. If it is your first time using liner, pencil may be your best bet to practice with. Pencil eyeliners are easy, convenient and if you make a mistake, simply rub it off and try again. The major downside to pencil liners is their ability to smudge easily. One way to cheat when applying eyeliner is to use eye shadow as a liner instead of actual eyeliner. Simply wet your brush and dip it into your eye shadow and applying it accordingly.
Start by having a steady hand. Take your brush, pencil or applicator and get it as close as possible to the lash line along your top eyelid. Draw a line from the inner corner to the outer corner in one fluid stroke, while following the natural lines and contours of your eyelid. In the beginning keep your line thin and build on it later. It’s much easier to correct any mistakes using thin lines. Make sure the line you’ve created is solid and even. If you need to make it thicker do so by repeating the process or just adding liner to the outer part of the lid along the lashes. Keeping the line thin in the front part of the lid and gradually making it thicker as you reach the outer corner makes for a classic, sexy look.
When it comes to the lower lashes, line only the outer two-thirds of the eye. Make sure the lines meet at the back corner of the eye to keep the overall shape. For the lower lashes, keep the line thin and don’t go overboard. If you choose to line the entire lower lash, this will create a closed look which can make your eyes appear smaller. This is ideal if you have naturally large eyes and are trying to downplay them but for normal-size eyes, only lining part of the lower lash will keep your eyes from disappearing beneath your liner.
The key to flawless eyeliner application is to constantly check your work. Step back every so often and look at yourself in the mirror. Liner tends to smear, while powder eye shadow sometimes creates drips/spots under the eye and cheek that appear as flecks. Liquid liner can appear too harsh. To soften the look take a damp tissue and softly dab at the line until you get the right look.
