Whether it’s due to the summer heat, a workout at the gym or even running to catch a flight at the airport, from time to time we all sweat. And it’s our makeup that suffers. It sags or (heaven forbid) even runs!
So a sweat-proof makeup should solve the problem, right? For the most part, the answer is yes. And, as a whole, sweat-proof makeup lives up to its claims, but there are a few myths out there that could be dispelled as well as a few truths to be expounded.
Fact: Sweat-proof Makeup Works (When Applied Properly) The key here is "when applied properly". You want to start at the beginning with a sweat-proof foundation. If you don’t start with a sweat-proof foundation, a sweat-proof concealer and blush aren’t going to do you much good when the heat is on. Most of the major cosmetic companies offer a sweat-proof foundation. Look for products that are oil-free and either gel- or silicone-based. These will adhere well to the skin and have been known to not only outlast a jog, but even a jog in the rain! Most of these products will give you a sheer matte finish. For more coverage, try one of the new sweat-proof spray-on foundations – it may take a little practice to get the technique down, but once you do, blending is a breeze.
Top off with a waterproof concealer and a gel-based or sweat-proof blush to finish your look. Look for product names that include "sport", "active", or “workout” to help you find the right formulas.
Fiction: Waterproof Mascara is Best for the Gym Waterproof formulas have an added polymer that bonds them to your lashes so you can swim, shower and even cry without worrying about your lashes. But these products come with a downside – they’re harsh on your lashes and can lead to brittleness.
Try a water-resistant product instead. Most of these are silicone-based and won’t go anywhere. And best of all, they are much easier on your lashes. If you want a quick at-home test to see if your water-resistant mascara will run, try removing it with warm water and makeup remover. If it comes off in sheets, you can rest assured that you can cry at your sister’s wedding or sweat in the rain and it won’t run.
Fact: Sweat-proof Concealer can Stay on All Day A good sweat-proof concealer will blend in completely and stay crease resistant until you remove it. And, in addition to staying in place over the course of a day (and even a workout), many of the sweat-proof concealers on the market can perform double-duty as all-day skin care. Look for products that contain chamomile or even honey. These ingredients can help to hydrate and condition the delicate skin around the eyes.
Fiction: Sweat-proof Makeup is Difficult to Remove It seems like a product that is supposed to withstand everything we can throw at it in the gym, on the trail or even at the mall would not come off nicely when we’re done with it. But that’s where we’d be wrong – there are a variety of inexpensive makeup removers on the market that are specifically formulated to remove waterproof products and also soothe the skin as they work. Look for greaseless formulas with botanical ingredients like lavender. Don’t overlook the pads and wipes either. Many of these can be just as gentle as the creams and so much more convenient!
