Dr. Milan Shah of Beautologie Medical Group in Bakersfield said the so-called "Botax," which would tax cosmetic procedures deemed not medically necessary to help fund health insurance reforms, is prompting many people to seek treatments now to avoid paying taxes later, KERO-TV, Bakersfield, reported Friday.

Shah expressed strong disapproval of the proposed tax, which has yet to make it any further than U.S. Senate Finance Committee discussions.

Supporters of the tax, Shah said, believe it would target the upper class and upper-middle class.

"But in reality, those are not the patients that make up the majority of cosmetic surgery," she said. "There is going to be a ripple effect if there is a tax on plastic surgery because where do you stop? Getting your hair colored is not a medical necessity, but it is something that makes you feel good about yourself. If you tax that, how fair would that be?"
