The growing popularity of medical spas has resulted in state legislators in California taking a stance to have legislations passed governing their operations. Frequent complaints of burns from improperly done laser treatments are just part of the reason for demanding standards in the beauty treatment industry. It is reported that in 2005 over 2.1 million cosmetic surgery procedures were performed in the US alone. The growing demand for anti-aging procedures, both surgical and non-surgical has given rise to the explosion of medical spas. The demand for standards is supported by some in the industry while others see it as a death knell.
Driving the demand for the industry to be regulated is Senator Liz Figueroa. She has already introduced Senate bill 1423 which is requesting that doctors be present for laser and surgical cosmetic procedures deemed as being minor.
