Possibly spurred by reports of deaths and complications relating to cosmetic procedures, the Senate Business and Professions Committee in California recently took action. According to reports, they passed a bill requiring that prospective plastic surgery patient complete a physical exam before being allowed to proceed. While the California Medical Board backs the new bill, the Department of Consumer Affairs feels that existing legislation is sufficient. In November, 2007, Donda West, the mother of rap star, Kanye West, died while recuperating from cosmetic surgery. Following her death, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) reminded the public that plastic surgery is as serious as any other type of procedure. It also pointed out that cosmetic surgery related deaths are rare.
