After enjoying a cosmetic surgery boom for ten years, the cosmetic surgery industry continues to be hit by the worldwide recession. According to the latest reports the figures for surgical procedures went down by 15% last year while those for non-invasive procedures slumped by almost 12%. Plastic surgeon Dr. Stiles Jewett was quoted as saying of the trend, “Cosmetic surgery is always the first to go when the economy goes down. The demand doesn`t necessarily go away… but the ability to pay for it does.” Other reports online indicate that some plastic surgeons are returning to the core business of general health and dentistry to bolster their ailing businesses.
At any rate, the industry continues to post healthy figures indicating that there is hope for recovery in the future. Almost $12 billion was paid to doctors last year for over 10 million procedures.
