Skincare Tips for Dealing with Freckles
Not many people give freckles much thought. Often we think that it’s a matter of being born with them or not, however, what you may not be aware of is the fact that freckles can actually appear on almost anybody. If you find your freckles a nuisance and want to minimize their appearance (or prevent more from cropping up) or if you want to learn how to prevent freckles from appearing on your complexion in the first place, there are a few alternatives you can try out.

Freckles are caused by cells in the skin called melanocytes, which produce melanin (the substance responsible for skin color). The freckles themselves are actually small spots of pigment that has an increased level of melanin in them. When exposed to sunlight, freckles can become darker. In fact, freckles are most commonly found in areas that are frequently exposed to the sun, including the face, nose, neck, and shoulders.

If you were already born with freckles, one important step you can take to avoid developing more is by wearing sunscreen anytime you plan on being outdoors in the sun. This will prevent the UV rays from darkening your existing freckles as well as the possibility for newer ones to form. Since many freckled individuals tend to be fair skinned, wearing sunscreen with a strong SPF is also encouraged. SPF 40 or higher should be ideal, especially if you tend to burn easily. The sun and your amount of time under direct sunlight play a huge part in the state of your freckles or preventing them. In addition to wearing sunscreen each day you’ll also want to stay out of tanning salons, since this is just another form of excessive exposure to ultraviolet rays.

Sometimes taking certain types of medication can make your skin more sensitive to things like sunlight. Birth control pills and some antibiotics are known for this side effect. Check the labels of your medication and note whether skin sensitivity to sunlight is listed. If you’re unsure, talk to your doctor or your local pharmacist who can check your medication for you.

There are also ways to remove freckles that you may want to look into. Fading creams and skin bleaching products are available over-the-counter. These products work to lighten the color of your freckles, creating a more evened complexion. Common ingredients used in such items include hydroquinone and kojic acid. There are also laser treatments that can be used on freckles. After exposure to the laser, the freckles become darker and then gradually start to flake off after a few weeks. Depending on how many freckles you want to get rid of, more than one treatment may be necessary. Be sure to do your research and get a consultation done with a licensed professional if you are interested in getting laser treatment.
