Wedding Make-Up: FAQ

Should I try any new cosmetics or facial products for my wedding day?

You already know not to try new cosmetics on your wedding day. What if it makes you break out? That would be disastrous. If there's something that you think you might want to try, do it at least a month ahead of time. If your skin is used to getting a facial, that's fine. If you're not used to getting facials, also do that a month in advance of your wedding. The point of a facial is to pull out the imperfections and the impurities and that means you're going to break out, and you don't want to have that happen five days before the wedding.

Should I have a professional wedding make-up and hair person?

I think that has a lot to do with how you feel as the bride. Some brides are so comfortable with the way they do their own hair or their own make-up that they don't feel like they want to look different on their wedding day. You want to look on your wedding day the way you look; enhanced, but not like somebody else, so it's very important to you. The vendors who do hair and make-up are well-trained to do hair and make-up for weddings and to do that enhancement without changing the way you actually look. It's a very nice perk. If it works into your budget it's something absolutely wonderful to treat yourself with.

Should I get a facial just before my wedding day?

If you are used to getting facials, if this is something you normally do, then it's fine to have one before your wedding. It's going to make you feel great, it's going to give your skin that glow, perk you up, etc. You also know how your skin reacts to getting a facial. If you're not used to getting facials, if it's not part of your normal routine, then please do that a month ahead of time. The point of a facial is to draw out the impurities in your skin, so you're going to break out, and you certainly don't want to have that happen three to five days before your wedding. Have a facial far enough in advance of the wedding so everything can clear up, and your skin will look beautiful.

Does it matter what type of mascara I wear on my wedding day?

If you have a makeup artist doing your special makeup for the wedding day, she'll be using waterproof mascara. If you're doing it yourself, be sure to purchase waterproof mascara. Most brides do cry. If you don't cry, that's great, but if it's a warm day and you're getting a little bit of a glow, that's another thing that could make mascara run. You certainly don't want to have runny mascara on your face.

Should I try a new fragrance for my wedding day?

Don't try a new fragrance on your wedding day. Not everything that smells great in the bottle smells great on us, and we have to try those things to find out. If you're going to try out a new fragrance, again, purchase it a few weeks ahead of time. Let him smell it, to see if he likes how you smell. He's the most important one that day.

Do I need a trial makeup session before my wedding?

You do need a trial makeup session before your wedding. If you are using a makeup artist that you haven't used before, you absolutely want that person to do a trial on you so you can see if you like what they do. If you don't, you're going to be moving on to the next one. If you're going to be having a friend do your makeup, I'd want to give her a shot at it too. Let her practice before one of your showers or something, and do the makeup. See if you like how it looks. That's very important.

Should I discuss my hair style with my make-up artist?

You want your makeup artist to know what your hair is going to be and you want your hairdresser to know what your make-up is going to be at your wedding. They are very interrelated. Very often, if you are having hair and make-up done by professionals at the same place, if they are both coming to the hotel to do it, they will start your hair then do some of your makeup, finish your hair and then finish your make-up. They will actually switch back and forth so that everything is well integrated. You want to be sure that your make-up artist knows what your hairstyle is like. If it is up, they will know that they have to perhaps do some makeup on the back of your neck or down around the side of your jaw line, etc. Yo
